November 2026 GCSE Resits: The Ultimate Booking Guide for Private Candidates

Updated 25-July-2026

The November series exists for one reason: so that anyone who needs a grade 4 in GCSE English Language or Maths does not have to wait a whole year to try again. For private candidates, it is often the fastest route to the grade a job, course or apprenticeship is asking for.

If you are reading this in mid October 2026, the standard booking window has closed and entries are now in the late fee period. That does not necessarily mean November is out of reach, but it does mean acting quickly.

Who can sit GCSEs in November

Only GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics are offered in November, by AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC. Every other GCSE subject is summer only.

There is also an age rule. AQA's GCSE Mathematics specification states that November entries are only open to students who were at least 16 on the previous 31 August. For November 2026, that means turning 16 by 31 August 2026. Every adult meets this rule.

Booking now, in the late period

  1. Email the centre today. Give your subject, exam board, specification code and, for Maths, your tier. Our address is info@privateexamscentre.co.uk.

  2. Ask whether a late entry can still be accepted. The boards' deadline was 4 October, so a late entry depends on the exam board accepting it and on space at the centre.

  3. Confirm the fee before you pay. A late fee applies on top of the standard fee, and from 25 October the high late fee applies. Remember that no refunds are given after the first deadline under our refund policy, so only book if you are sure you will sit.

  4. Check your English Language entry. If you need the entry with speaking, the presentation has to happen before the spoken language grades are submitted on 5 November. Ask the centre how that will be arranged before you book.

  5. Register and pay online, then wait for your confirmation email.

If you need access arrangements, mention them in your very first message. The processing deadline of 1 November leaves almost no time.

What it costs

Fees for November 2026 entries made before the first deadline were:

Entry

Fee before first deadline

GCSE Mathematics, any board

£250

GCSE English Language, retake (carrying forward an earlier spoken language result)

£230

GCSE English Language, with speaking

£250

Late entries cost more. Ask for the exact late or high late fee for your entry when you contact us. The full list is on our exam fees page.

Two decisions to get right

Your Maths tier. Foundation covers grades 1 to 5 and Higher covers 4 to 9, with an allowed grade 3 for candidates who narrowly miss a 4. Below that, a Higher candidate is unclassified. If your target is a grade 4, Foundation is usually the safer choice. If you need a 6 or above, it has to be Higher.

Your English Language entry. If you sat GCSE English Language in June 2017 or later, you will usually already have a spoken language endorsement result that can be carried forward, so the retake entry is the right one. If your last attempt was earlier, or you never completed the endorsement, you need the entry with speaking.

In the exam weeks

The November papers run between 2 and 11 November. Check the exact date and session for each of your papers on the board's timetable, which you can find on our exam timetables page.

Bring original photo ID, such as a passport or photographic driving licence, to every paper. Leave your watch and phone outside the exam room, use black ink and, for Maths, bring a calculator that is approved, working and set to exam mode for the calculator papers. If illness or another serious problem affects an exam, tell the centre the same day: special consideration requests close on 18 November.

Results in January

Results are released on 14 January 2027. If you sat with Private Exams Centre, they are emailed to you by 9am, and you can also collect a copy from our office. Our results day guide for private candidates explains what to do if a grade falls short, including the review of results deadline of 18 February 2027.

If November 2026 is too soon

A resit only helps if you have improved since your last attempt. If the late fees, the short notice or your own preparation make November feel rushed, the June 2027 series is the next opportunity, with a standard entry deadline at Private Exams Centre of 15 February 2027. English Language and Maths are normally offered every November, so November 2027 is another option.
